Klaus Janson
intro   updated 10/22/02

For comic book fans, Klaus Janson really needs no introduction. His ground-breaking work on Daredevil and Batman has made him a legend in the industry.

Klaus has been involved with Comiculture since it's conception as an advisor and a contributor. The first issue contained a very personal story (see Training Wheels, below) and a sneak-peek at his new book on inking. Contributions to future issues include: a collaboration with writer David Wohl & penciller Don Hudson in the story, "Full Moon Junction," an article exploring the differences between classic comic book story-telling and the "cinematic" story-telling popular in modern comics. Also, Klaus has drawn the cover to Comiculture #3 and is writing and illustrating a science-fiction story to appear in that issue.

More high-profile work includes a new Batman series with writer GREG RUCKA, art for an upcoming Iron Man story for Marvel and some secret projects in-the-works! If that isn't enough, Klaus is heavily involved with New York City's Museum of Comic Book Art and is a teacher at the School of Visual Arts. His teaching skills are being further put to use in a series of "How To" books being published this year. Some of his lessons in comic artistry will also be available in Comiculture and in this section of our website.

TRAINING WHEELS

Told in the style of a "visual poem," this 8-page story is, on the surface, a haunting tale about a photographer reflecting on his childhood. Beneath is a complicated character study that looks at the primordial events that shape a man's life.

Story, art & color guides by Klaus Janson.

Training Wheels appears in Comiculture #1.

BATMAN: DEATH AND THE MAIDENS

Klaus is currently illustrating this nine-part limited series for DC Comics, written by Greg Rucka. Rumors call this "the last Ra's Al Ghul story!"

THE DC COMICS GUIDE TO INKING COMICS

Klaus's second in a series of "how-to" books published by DC Comics. This book will interest both the aspiring artist and enthusiasts for the art form. Using examples of his own art, photographs and all the know-how of his successful career, Klaus sheds some light on this often misunderstood aspect of comic book artistry.

Issue #1 of Comiculture included a sneak peek at this book while it was still in-progress.
