"Start to Finish"

I remember inking backgrounds for Bob Layton a long time ago. I had been working in the Marvel Bullpen and trying to learn as much as possible so I could go freelance and he saw something in my portfolio that he liked. He had a place in Long Island, NY and I took some pages to show. They weren't very good, but he had some valuable advice!
  • Keep it simple, save time and effort.
  • Make your characters attractive!
  • Draw and Ink your textures differently
  • And most importantly--Draw your figure, then add clothes.

He showed me how my art could improve by going over it with tracing paper. It took me a while to embrace the concept, but if you don't create the foundation, your figures can look rubbery or dumpy.

I've included 3 panels that I've drawn from start to finish. I drew the figures knowing that I will cover them in clothing and debris.

Two figures are running in a dark tunnel, being thrown by an explosion. This first drawing shows the proportions as they fall forward.

This panel shows the clothing added

This inked version has clearly defined light sources and dramatic drapery.

So that's my 2 cents. If you have your own 2 cents, send them to me care of this website!
